After 30 years in this field (and a degree of my own), I'll show you why a $50,000 cybersecurity degree is the wrong investment for most people, and exactly what to do instead.
A cybersecurity degree fails in three structural ways: it teaches breadth when the market hires depth, it teaches theory when employers hire people who can do the work, and the true cost — once you count four years of lost salary — lands between $414,000 and $500,000. Compare that to a focused certs-and-projects path at $3,000–$10,000 that gets you job-ready in 6–12 months.
This isn't anti-education. It's a diagnosis of where the degree path breaks and a clear corrective: pick one specialty, get certified in that lane, build real projects, and find mentorship. The market doesn't hire what you studied — it hires what you can do.
