Are you aiming to maximize your earnings in cybersecurity? Today, we'll explore the top skills that can significantly boost your salary and accelerate your career. Whether you're just starting or already in the field, we'll cover what skills matter most and how to develop them. I'm Nathan from StationX, and in this episode of Cyber Security Diaries, we'll start with the lowest-paid skills (which are still well paid) and work our way up to the highest—so stick around to find out which skill set ranks at the top!
Make sure to like and subscribe if you want more insights like this. And stay until the end, where I'll share bonus tips on how you can increase your earnings by 30% to 50% above the averages I'll be quoting for each skill set, plus get a free guide packed with even more details.
Now, let’s get into the skills, starting with the lowest of the highest-paid. First up, we have operational security skills.
These involve incident detection, threat response, and automation using tools like Splunk, QRadar, and CrowdStrike. If you’re proficient with SIEM tools and can automate tasks, you’ll be in demand. You can expect to earn $91,000 to $143,000+, and certifications like Security+ and CySA+ can help you stand out and gain these skills.
And remember, for any of these skill sets I talk about, there’s more detail on the specifics and how to acquire them in that PDF guide at the end, which you can grab.
The next well-paid skill is network security.
This field covers firewall configuration, VPN setup, and using tools like Wireshark and Snort to analyze network traffic. Configuring devices like Palo Alto and Cisco ASA is essential for protecting organizations from threats. Mastering these skills can earn you $110,500 to $156,000+. Certifications like CCNP Security or CISSP are valuable.
Moving along, we have ethical hacking skills.
This focuses on identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities to strengthen security. Skills in penetration testing, vulnerability scanning, and report writing are critical, along with tools like Kali Linux, Burp Suite, and Nmap. Ethical hackers typically earn between $104,000 and $169,000+. Certifications like OSCP and CEH appear on job specs and will boost your profile in this skill set.
Following that, malware analysis skills.
This area involves reverse-engineering malicious software to understand its behavior and mitigate its impact. Reverse engineering, behavioral analysis, and tools like IDA Pro, Ghidra, and Cuckoo Sandbox are crucial. Professionals with this skill set typically earn $121,500 to $175,500+, and certifications like GREM and CISSP are highly sought after.
Next up, incident response skills.
Managing and mitigating security breaches requires expertise in forensic analysis, threat detection, and disaster recovery, along with tools like EnCase, FTK, and Splunk. Professionals with these skills can expect to earn $117,000 to $182,000+. Certifications like GCIH and GCFA will enhance your credibility.
The following skill area is application security.
Protecting software and web applications involves secure coding, SAST/DAST testing, and API security, along with tools like SonarQube, Veracode, and Burp Suite. Professionals with these skills can earn $128,800 to $195,000+. Certifications like CSSLP or OSWE will make you more competitive in this space.
Another well-paid skill area is security management.
Overseeing an organization’s security policies and managing risk requires skills in risk management, security governance, strategy and regulatory compliance. Tools like RSA Archer and QRadar are often used. With strong management skills, you can earn between $120,000 and $195,000+. Certifications like CISM and CISSP are critical.
Moving higher up the list, cloud security.
With more businesses moving to the cloud, skills in cloud architecture, encryption, and IAM are increasingly valuable, especially with tools like AWS Security Hub, Azure Security Center, and Google Cloud Security. Cloud security professionals can earn between $110,000 and $204,000+. Certifications like AWS Certified Security and CCSP will make you a standout candidate.
Near the top of the list, we find security architecture.
Designing secure systems requires knowledge of network design, risk assessments, and zero-trust architecture. Tools like AWS Security Hub and Palo Alto firewalls are essential. Professionals in this area can earn between $156,000 and $234,000. Certifications like CISSP, SABSA, and TOGAF are highly recommended.
In one of the most emerging fields, we have AI/ML security.
This area focuses on securing AI models, adversarial testing, and privacy-preserving techniques. Tools like TensorFlow and PyTorch are used here. Experts in this field can expect to earn $105,000 to $250,000+, making it one of the most lucrative areas in cyber security.
Finally, at the top of the list, risk management and governance.
CISOs oversee an organization’s entire security framework, managing risk, strategic planning, and compliance. Your tools are soft skills like leadership, communication, problem solving and critical thinking. With strong governance skills, you can earn between $165,000 and all the way up to $490,000+. Certifications like CISM, CISSP, and CRISC are crucial for reaching this level.
Alright, as promised, let's talk about how you can boost your earnings by 30% to 50% above the averages I've quoted for each skill set. One of the secrets is? Working for large enterprises like Fortune 500 companies and multinational corporations. These organizations pay significantly more for cybersecurity professionals because of the scale, complexity, and sensitivity of the data they manage.
For example, in the tech industry, companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple are known for paying their senior security roles anywhere from $200,000 to $300,000, sometimes more.
In finance, you've got companies like JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Citibank where top cybersecurity professionals can make over $200,000, and CISOs can earn $400,000 or more.
Healthcare is another industry that pays well—companies like UnitedHealth Group and Pfizer offer salaries in the range of $150,000 to $300,000, especially for roles that protect patient data.
And then there's defense and aerospace. Companies like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon? They're offering some of the highest salaries in cybersecurity, with roles reaching $300,000 or more at the senior and executive levels.
The gaming industry is emerging as a surprising leader in security salaries. Companies like Epic Games and Electronic Arts are offering competitive packages ranging from $180,000 to $350,000 for senior security roles, often with additional equity compensation.
And I’m going to give you two bonus skills now too—specialist roles where there’s a high earning potential in cyber security.
First, the cyber security lawyer. These experts focus on the legal side of digital security, handling issues like data breaches, compliance with privacy laws, and advising companies on regulations. Many work as in-house counsel for big companies, providing guidance to keep businesses compliant and secure. In the US, salaries can range from $70,000 to $400,000+, with those in senior in-house roles at large companies reaching the top end of that scale.
Next up is cyber security sales—a role where you sell security solutions like software and managed services to businesses. The pay usually includes a base salary plus commission for meeting sales targets. In the US, total earnings can range from $120,000 to $500,000+, with the higher end seen at big companies like Microsoft, AWS, or Palo Alto Networks, where top performers can earn big by closing large deals and exceeding targets.
Before we wrap up, here are three emerging trends that could impact these salary ranges:
Zero Trust Architecture specialists are seeing 20-30% higher salaries
Quantum-safe security experts are becoming increasingly valuable
Privacy engineering roles are commanding premium salaries in regulated industries
So That's our breakdown of the highest-paid skills in cybersecurity.
So Whether you're focused on operations or aiming for cloud security, these skill sets can significantly boost your career.
